The day that Microsoft saved Apple

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 17, 2009 in Apple

Video: Macworld Boston 1997-The Microsoft Deal [12:05 min]

This is the kind of stories I like to publish on weekends, because they bring one to ponder.

12 years ago, a few months after the return of Steve Jobs to Apple, the economic situation of the manzanita was quite precarious and the return of Jobs at the helm, who earlier had been fired was the largest show how desperate was the board of directors of Apple. But that was not any surprise, we were all shocked when the August 6, 1997, attendees enjoyed the keynote by Steve Jobs in Boston, and suddenly saw the face of the arch-natural enemy of Apple, then the CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates, mirándoles from a video screen via video conference.

At that time, many of those present thought it was some kind of joke, but it was then that Bill Gates revealed that his company (Microsoft) had made an investment of $ 150 million in Apple shares without voting rights, a investment that would perhaps help to secure the future of the signing of the apple.

In exchange for that money and a commitment to support Office for Mac for five years, Apple has agreed to abandon a long process of claim in alleging that Microsoft had copied the look and design of the Mac OS on Windows (maybe things was true, but the result was obviously not the best) and undertook to make Internet Explorer the default browser on their computers (leaving the traditional Netscape). Some say that the agreement included more than two parties, but that is the subject of another post.

Sighs of shock came from the audience, while Jobs said, “We must abandon some notions at this time. We must stop thinking that if Apple wins, Microsoft has to lose. “

The 6 applications across web developer should have

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 17, 2009 in Software

AppsMany programmers are dedicated to the design and/or web development. There are many applications out there that can help us to perform our work to a greater or lesser extent.

Take several years after this, I am going to talk about the tools I like. I know this is something very personal and that what I say here is not a universal truth, everyone should find the application you are most satisfied and the most convenient location.

  • Pixelmator: How I do not have enough money to catch the almighty Photoshop, I prefer this great photo editing application that has nothing to envy (only vector drawing). But to create buttons and money is going very well. It costs $ 59
  • Sequel Pro: Before it used CocoaSQL but this was discontinued and became part of, for me, the better manager mySQL databases for the Mac is free but donations accepted.
  • Textmate: The definitive text editor for Mac that much know already. It has tinted according to the source programming language you want, supports plugins and support for color themes. It costs € 48.75
  • CSSEdit: While taking Textmate is optional, it is of great help make the style sheets from our website with this application because it has a graphical interface where you can build the css rule. ¿Price? € 29.95
  • Cyberduck: Many defenders Transmit FTP client for excellence, but I will stay with Cyberduck which has many characteristics of transmitting and it’s free
  • Things: The best GTD manager for Mac I know. It seems it was designed by Apple itself. Simple, fast and efficient, has become an extension of mine What would my projects without this tool needs to be done? Cost $ 49.95

eBay Apps in iPhone with Push notifications

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 17, 2009 in Iphone

eBayiPhone02_170809

A few days the implementation of eBay for our iPhone was updated to version 1.4.0, with a handful of interesting news and that set the tone for what may be the applications that are to come. The main feature that we are push notifications to alert us when someone bid higher than ours, or when a product is nearing the end of one of the auctions that we are following, and may set the time before we want to be notified .

Another development, also very interesting is the possibility of making payments through PayPal from the application itself, so that we can say that it is possible to make the whole process of buying on eBay just to this application from our iPhone.

The official list of characteristics of the application is:

  • Optimized for iPhone OS 3.0
  • Support payments through PayPal integrated
  • Push notifications for outbid and auctions that we are following.
  • Opinions on a recent seller
  • Search items
  • Search alerts

In this way, eBay has become a mobile application that has the benefit from the Push Notifications, a long-awaited by many, but currently little exploited by developers. The application is available for download (link opens iTunes), is 1.5MB and is free.

Apple iPhone vs Blackberry, who wins the battle?

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 16, 2009 in Iphone

iPhoneVsBlackberry

A highly organized battle for sales is triggered between the Blackberry and Apple iPhone. Research in Motion (RIM) Blackberry associated with the company opened a store that specializes in applications for their phones, this is a way to compete with Apple’s iPhone.

For starters, the store will offer 1,000 programs from which they can choose from financial news to general news or music channel MTV, will also have access to social networks and games until some of these services will be at no cost. Among the applications that are credited to the store, you will find various prices, from a financial to $ 3 more expensive than worth up to $ 200.

The name of this store is Blackberry App World and so far we found this store in United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, but do not rush, plans are to install all that is possible throughout the world. This market is showing future and that is good example of this is that Blackberry are three companies that are positioned well in this market is the most followed App Store, Nokia has come to stand firm and Microsoft has announced it will open another shop online for your system Windows Mobile.

Safari is updated to version 4.03

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 16, 2009 in Software

apple-safari

Apple has introduced in the past few days a new update of its excellent Web browser: Safari. Do not bring any supernovedad nor anything that is extremely new, but we know that Apple does not fall asleep with the great competition that exists in the industry.

Among the improvements, I would emphasize that continue to improve support for the HTML5 and specifically improve the performance of the label , a big step towards standardizing the web.

As always, available via the Software Update to our Mac

The Mac Tablet, in October for $ 800?

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 16, 2009 in Mac

TabletMac_160809
The rumors surrounding the new product that Apple plans to launch Several launch dates. While some opt for a launch this September, others claim that up to January next year we will not see any major development in the company. However, half Chinese just go for a launch of the rumored Mac Tablet for next October.

Moreover, not only the date but says that, among other data, gives an approximate price: $ 800. Supposedly, the device would use a 9.7 inch display with multitouch capabilities, and would aim to compete with NetBooks of $ 500 in competition.

Apple has already said two press conferences that the other companies offering computer hardware with a poor, and that the company has failed to make a computer so small and quality. Either way, it seems that according to all the seepage Apple has something up his sleeve.

10 things to improve in future iPhones

Posted by Venu Thomas on Aug 15, 2009 in Iphone

iphone As many already know, I’ma big fan of the iPhone since its first version, because in my opinion was one of the most revolutionary devices in recent times. It is true that perhaps there are others with better technical specifications, but to date I have not tested or one that has the elegance of the implementation of which has the Apple iPhone. And now that the App Store has flourished, its value has increased exponentially, leaving behind much of the competition.

However, there is room for improvement, and that is what this article today.

Once we start (in no particular order):

  1. Add a second camera in front of the iPhone and include iChat, so we can do video conferencing. And allow others to access this feature (ie, Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, etc).
  2. Allow to synchronize our data with the PC / Laptop / Netbook by WiFi. Currently this can only be done via USB. It is true that if you have the paid service that MobileMe can synchronize up by WiFi or 3G, but you have to pay and not everything is synchronized (eg videos).
  3. So you can print wirelessly by WiFi or Bluetooth natively. It is now possible to download applications from the App Store (Shop Applications) printing to specific models (like HP), but I mean something more generic, and is supported by the greats of the industry (HP, Canon, Epson , Samsung, etc).
  4. Create a Bluetooth standard and / or the USB connector for controls on video games. This is something that a market exists today, since not all games are suited to play effectively with it multi-touch screen of iPhone. The idea is that you can buy an ultra-thin (and portable) which communicates with the iPhone and containing physical buttons.
  5. A mini-HDMI connector to connect the iPhone to a high definition screen and see photos, videos, video games, and even the song list. Remember that HDMI also transmits audio.
  6. Able to record video at a minimum resolution of 720p (and 1080p would be even better). The graphics chip is known to 3GS iPhone can do, but for some reason Apple only supports VGA quality (640 x 480) instead of 1280 x 720. Perhaps because of space issues in the flash memory of the iPhone …
  7. A standard for bidirectional communication via Bluetooth with cars, so as to avoid a thousand ways that exist today to connect an iPhone to the car. In this way it would be possible to see the names of the songs on the radio of the car, and even control the iPod from the iPhone’s auto guide and use the functionality of talking on cell phone hands-free mode. It would be great to even use the mini-HDMI connector I suggest in Section 6 to see the photos and videos of the iPhone screen LCD in the car (great for kids), or even playing video games with a Bluetooth control as suggested in Section 4.
  8. To allow a direct transfer between the iPhone and all sorts of content (music, photos, videos, contacts, calendar, notes, web pages, etc). Apple will not want to allow this because no one wants to transfer songs (and videos) purchased by iTunes, for free to other people, but at least let those we transfer songs and videos that we climbed to the iPhone.
  9. Although 2 years ago I would have liked the iPhone’s Safari browser would support Flash today think otherwise. Better to cope with HTML 5 and the new open standards that do the same thing as Flash and in a manner compatible with other browsers, and more lightweight and compatible with the Web. One reason was that I wanted to before Flash video (like YouTube), but now YouTube is encoding their videos directly to MPEG-4, which is much more efficient to play directly from a container Flash.
  10. Greater freedom in the App Store. This is something that many will complain (and the main reason to give a good look at Google Android) since Apple has an iron hand in the process of accepting applications to its App Store. It has all kinds of restrictions, from an inability to create applications that compete against those that come installed on the iPhone by default (such as an alternative to Safari or iTunes) to applications that go against the interests of companies phone (eg to avoid that Skype works on 3G, and only do it for WiFi) and avoid applications that load other applications (such as emulators of classic video games), and a host of other restrictions.

And you suggest that further improvements?
